The Real and Raw Nurse Mentor

The Real & Raw Nurse Mentor

Hi, I'm Kylie.

Registered Nurse • Founder • Speaker • Mentor

Most importantly...

I'm a nurse who believes the future of healthcare depends on the wellbeing of the people who deliver it.

For more than two decades, I've cared for patients, led teams, mentored nurses and experienced the extraordinary privilege of being part of one of the world's most trusted professions.

I've also experienced the side of nursing that too few people are willing to talk about.

The exhaustion.

The guilt.

The pressure.

The expectation that caring for everyone else should always come before caring for yourself.

That experience changed my life.

And it became the reason The Empowered Nurse Collective exists.

The Real & Raw Nurse Mentor

The part nobody prepares you for.

For years I believed being a good nurse meant giving everything.

I said yes when I was exhausted. I stayed back because my patients needed me. I skipped meals. Missed birthdays. Ignored the headaches. Pushed through the tears.

I told myself everyone else was coping, so I should be able to as well.

I wore exhaustion like a badge of honour, because that is what nursing had taught me.

Somewhere along the way I stopped asking how I was. I only asked whether everyone else was okay.

It wasn't one bad day. It was thousands of small moments that taught me my needs came last.

Eventually my body stopped asking politely.

Two significant spinal injuries changed everything. The first happened while I was caring for patients. The second ended my career as I knew it.

Months of surgeries. Rehabilitation. Chronic pain. And underneath all of it, the belief that I would heal and return, because nursing wasn't just my career. It was who I was.

Then came the hardest part. Not the surgery. Not the pain. Not learning how to walk confidently again.

The hardest part was losing the identity I had spent decades building.

Who was I if I wasn't the nurse everyone relied on? Who was I without the uniform? Who was I when I couldn't save everyone else?

Nobody prepares you for that grief.

People talk about burnout as though it is simply being tired. It isn't. It is the slow erosion of your identity. It is living with a nervous system that never feels safe. It is feeling guilty for resting. It is believing your value comes from how much you sacrifice. It is waking up one day and no longer recognising the woman looking back at you.

I hoped the system I had devoted my life to would stand beside me. Instead, processes became more important than people. Policies mattered more than healing. Years of loyalty seemed to disappear overnight.

I wasn't just grieving the loss of my career. I was grieving the loss of trust.

For a long time I thought something was wrong with me. Why couldn't I bounce back? Why couldn't I think positively enough? Why did I still feel unsafe?

Then I learned something that changed everything.

My nervous system wasn't broken. It was protecting me.

The anxiety. The hypervigilance. The exhaustion. The inability to switch off. They were not character flaws. They were survival responses.

That understanding was the beginning.

Healing was not quick. There were setbacks. There were tears. There were days I questioned everything. Days where I wanted to give up and not go on. And healing was never about becoming the woman I used to be. It was about becoming someone entirely new.

Healing wasn't about becoming a different woman. It was about rediscovering the woman who had always been there beneath the expectations, the exhaustion and the uniform.

She was still compassionate.

Still capable.

Still strong.

But she had learned that strength wasn't measured by how much she could sacrifice.

She understood boundaries.

She chose health over approval.

She no longer measured her worth by how much she could carry.

And she realised that caring for herself wasn't selfish - it was essential.

"The woman underneath the uniform is still there. She has simply been waiting for someone to remind her who she has always been."

What Nursing Taught Me

Emergency nursing taught me far more than clinical skills.

resilience

Leadership

Teamwork

Calm under pressure

Advocacy

Compassion

It also showed me something we don't talk about enough.

Our profession often celebrates self-sacrifice while overlooking self-care.

Many nurses have learned that saying "yes" is expected.

That asking for help is weakness.

That exhaustion is simply part of the job.

I don't believe that has to be our future.

I believe we can create a culture where nurses are supported to thrive-not just survive.

Why I Founded The Empowered Nurse Collective

"I wanted to build the community I wish had existed when I needed it most."

I didn't start this organisation because I wanted to build a coaching business. I started it because I wanted to build the community I wish had existed when I needed it most.

A place where nurses feel safe.

Seen.

Heard.

Empowered.

A place where confidence can be rebuilt.

Boundaries can be respected.

Wellbeing becomes a priority rather than an afterthought.

A place where nurses remember they are more than the uniform.

Today, The Empowered Nurse Collective is growing into something much bigger than me.

It's a movement dedicated to changing the culture of nursing.

One conversation. One workplace. One nurse at a time.

What I Believe

These beliefs shape every decision I make.

01

You are more than the uniform.

Your profession is part of who you are.

It should never become all of who you are.

02

Healthy nurses create healthier healthcare.

When nurses thrive, patients benefit, teams strengthen and workplaces become sustainable.

03

Confidence is built, not born.

Every nurse deserves to trust themselves and advocate for their needs without guilt.

04

Boundaries are an act of leadership.

They don't make you less compassionate. They allow your compassion to last.

05

Wellbeing is a professional responsibility.

Looking after yourself isn't selfish. It's one of the greatest gifts you can give your patients.

Healthy nurses create a healthier healthcare system.

My Approach

Lasting change happens when we support the whole person.

I believe lasting change happens when we support the whole person.

That's why my work integrates mentoring, education and evidence-informed wellbeing strategies that consider every aspect of health.

Depending on each nurse's goals, this may include:

Confidence and mindset

Self-advocacy & communication

Healthy boundaries

Leadership development

Nutrition & lifestyle medicine

Gut health

Evidence-informed supplementation

Skincare & self-care

Frequency-based wellbeing practices

Community & connection

Because no two nurses are the same. And no single solution works for everyone.

Beyond the Uniform

Outside of my work, I'm simply Kylie.

A wife, mother, grandmother,

A woman who loves meaningful conversations.

Who still believes people are fundamentally good.

Who understands what it's like to rebuild your life from the ground up.

Who knows healing isn't linear.

And who never wants another nurse to believe they have to carry everything alone.

I haven't created a perfect life.

I've created a more intentional one.

And that has made all the difference.

Looking Forward

My vision extends beyond individual mentoring.

I want to see:

healthier workplaces

Better leadership

More psychologically safe healthcare environments

Research that influences policy

Organisations that invest in the wellbeing of their nurses

And a future where no nurse feels they have to lose themselves in order to care for others

Because I truly believe...

The future of healthcare depends on the

wellbeing of the people who deliver it.

Looking Forward

Let's Start Your Real Shift
